THE VILLAGE OF DESHAIES

Deshaies's bay
|
It is the best preserved fishing village in Guadeloupe. Tucked in between the Caribbean sea and the mountains, Deshaies sits on one of the nicest coves in the Caribbean. A real plus for the pirates looking for shelter but not so good for the inhabitants in the 18th century. Deshaies is part of a superb Caribbean coast where the secluded beaches alternate with the cliffs . On the road side several view points allow the tourists to admire the awesome beauty of the scenery. A small island across from Deshaies is called "Ilet Kahouane". The precolombian indians gave it its name because it is shaped like a turtle. A large rock a little farther North sticks out of the Caribbean. It is "Tete a l'Anglais". It is one beach after another, Plage de Leroux, Anse Thomas, Plage de Grande Anse, Plage de la Perle, Plage de Riflet, Plage Fort Royal, Anse du Tillet, … The coast is breathtaking; |

Deshaies's bay |
In the bay today, the pleasure crafts outnumber the fishermen's boats. Several scuba dive boats also await the tourists. Heading south on the road from Dehaies will take you to "Jardin botanique de Deshaies".... the best tropical garden in Guadeloupe. |

Thanks to the foresight
of its people, Deshaies has avoided the construction of large hotel complexes
This has allowed it to preserve its character while opening itself to tourism. |

Deshaies: The church and bell tower |
Looking for a "Bed & Breafast" We call them "Chambre d'Hôte" Looking for a vacation rental? We call them "Gîtes" There in an abundance of both. This system has kept the economy in local hands which means that the welcome will be warmer And as today the church bell still rings the hours. Who needs a watch?.
